Bringing Up Puppy Series – Weird Dog Questions

by Lisa Scott on April 19, 2010

Hershey being Hershey

Every day, my dog does something that makes me go, ‘huh? I haven’t had so many bizarre questions to ask since I first had kids and had to figure out why my baby was throwing up on me every night. The good times keep on rolling with our newest baby—the one with fur. Here are a few of my latest queries keeping me up at night. So if you know the answer to any of these, please give me a shout.

1. We all know where our dog’s tongue has been. So, how long does it take those nasty germs to wash away? It’s just that Hershey loves to give big slobbery kisses, and I’d like to think they’re a little more sanitary than I currently believe them to be. And maybe my son could stop washing his hand every time she licks him if we knew for sure.

2. So, how exactly, am I supposed to get something out of her mouth that she shouldn’t be chewing? Without getting chewed myself, that is? The harder I try to pry her mouth open, the tighter she keeps it clamped shut! And that just seems to make her more determined to swallow the super important Lego piece she snatched off the floor that will leave my son unable to finish his model. Sticking your finger in a dog’s mouth seems like a bad idea. Is there some ninja jaw opening move I don’t know about?

3. Why does she need to find a new place to pee EVERY time we go out? If she’s going to pee in the same place inside, why not do that outside, too? And what exactly constitutes the perfect spot?

4. Does she have warts? She’s got little bumps on her muzzle and under her chin with whiskers growing out of them. What’s the deal with that?

5. Why is it fun to sniff where another dog has peed or pooped? Is she curious what type of food is being served at their house? Aww man, this dog gets table scraps! I am soooo jealous.

6. Does she know the cat is a cat, or does she think it’s another dog? And why does she like the cat? I thought dogs hated cats?

7. Do I need to be concerned when she laps water from a dirty puddle? (We’re giving her plenty of water at home, but puddle water must be more appealing. Maybe she prefers organic water.)

8. Is there anything she won’t eat? Is she smart enough to know if something is rotten or poisonous and to steer clear of it? She ate a pebble the other day before I could figure out how to get it out of her mouth (see question 2.) Is there anything she won’t eat? And why does she lick our trees outside? Just when I think I’ve seen it all, she’s doing something new and strange. It makes me wonder if we got the oddball of the litter.

9. Why do dogs like people so much? Is it just because we take care of them? Would they rather live on their own with other packs of dogs, or do they prefer humans?

10. How come her nose is wet sometimes and dry other times? I always thought a dry nose meant a sick pet. Is that true?

11. Hershey has a tiny white stripe on her chest, consisting of approximately 25 white hairs. Does this little stripe means she’s really not purebred?

So there you have it, just a few of the many questions Hershey has made me ponder. I wonder what the next mystery will be? I’m sure something new will come up tomorrow.
