If you think Christmas if just for humans, think again. Puppies can learn to enjoy the excitement of the holiday season, especially when doggie gifts are involved. Whether Fido’s been naughty or nice, be sure to include your puppy in your Christmas shopping plans.
Puppy gifts can be made inexpensively or purchased for exuberant amounts of money. Frugal owners might make their own toys and treats. Local pet stores offer many products and there’s no limit to what can be found on Internet pet sites.
The following is a list of some popular gift items to consider:
1. Collars
Collars are always a popular choice. They can be purchased for every season and holiday of the year. There are nautical choices for the puppy mariner. There are specialty collars for hunting dogs. Be sure to adequately size the collar to fit your puppy. Allow for growth.
2. Rawhide Bones
Rawhide bones are a good choice as long as your veterinarian has not cautioned you against giving them to your puppy. They come in sizes ranging from a couple of inches to a couple of feet in length and can provide hours of chewing fun for a puppy. It is important to use caution when giving rawhide treats to dogs. Some puppies will chew them until their gums bleed, so pay attention! Don’t let them swallow large pieces of rawhide.
3. Canine Snacks
There are all kinds of edible canine snacks that can be purchased as a Christmas treat. You can find everything from “people crackers” to look-alike steaks. Puppy owners should use caution when buying treats. Be sure to check the ingredients to insure your dog’s safety. For example, don’t buy chocolate treats because they are hazardous to a puppy’s health. Carob, an alternative to chocolate, is perfectly safe for canine consumption.
4. New Dog Bed
A new dog bed can certainly be a popular gift. Choose one that is adequate for your puppy’s needs. Christmas is a good time to splurge for the better model!
5. Tube Sock Toys
White tube socks are always a winner. Insert a tennis ball and tie a knot and you’ve created a cheap toy that most puppies can’t resist. Another option is to stuff a cotton tube sock with other socks and/or rags. This makes a great tug-of-war toy, as well as one that your puppy can toss in the air and catch, drag around or curl up with for a nap.
6. New Toys
Commercial puppy toys come in all sizes and shapes. Some squeak. Others squawk. Some make no noise at all. Some are rubber. Others are soft and fuzzy. There are toys that can be filled with peanut butter and canine cookies. No matter what your puppy likes or dislikes, someone makes a toy that your puppy won’t be able to resist.
7. Clothes
Whether or not Fido actually likes them remains to be seen, but the owners and their friends and family will get a kick out of the decked out canine coats. For the more adventurous of dog owners, there are swimsuits, jeans, shirts, and even underwear that can be purchased. If you like to make a fashion statement with your wardrobe, you can probably find puppy clothes to compliment your own.
Some dogs like to unwrap their own presents. If you allow them to do so, use caution and supervise them so they do not swallow or eat something they shouldn’t. Then sit back and watch them enjoy!
Christmas is the time to celebrate with family. Make sure not to forget the four-legged part of your family!
