Did you know that there are enough dog holidays to keep you busy celebrating throughout the whole year? You and your furry canine friend can have several parties every month.
In January, you can celebrate walking, training and dressing up your dog. January has been designated “Walk Your Pet Month,” so put on your exercise shoes, grab a leash and head out the door with your best friend. While walking is obviously great exercise for you and your dog, there is another hidden benefit. A regiment of structured exercise can help eliminate a dog’s behavioral problems.
February’s doggie celebrations include “National Prevent a Litter Month,” pet theft awareness, dog biscuit appreciation activities, responsible ownership and “Have A Heart for Chained Dogs Week.” Dogs Deserve Better, a non-profit group that involves people from across the nation, strives to make people aware of disgusting conditions that many chained dogs endure every day of their lives. Visit http://www.dogsdeservebetter.org/Valentines2009.html to see what you can do to help.
March is the month to honor pet sitters and celebrate “National Poison Prevention Week” and “National Puppy Day.” The Animal Miracle Foundation encourages people to celebrate “National Puppy Day,” which is March 25, 2010, as a means to recognize the unconditional love and friendships that dogs bestow upon us, as well as the need to find homes for those in need.
April is “Prevention of Animal Cruelty Month” and “Prevent Lyme Disease in Dog Month.” It is also time to celebrate “Don’t Step in the Dog Poop Day” and “National Scoop the Poop Week” in which people are urged to scoop up any pet feces they find lying around.
May offers numerous events to celebrate, including “Be Kind to Animals Month,” “Go Fetch,” which is a means of collecting food for homeless animals, and “May Day for Mutts.”
June’s holidays include “Take Your Pet to Work Week” and “Pet Appreciation Week,” which runs June 7 to June 13. “Pet Appreciation Week” is a chance to celebrate the importance of animals in our lives.
July’s holidays include “Animal Rights Awareness Week,” which runs July 18 to July 24 and “National Mutts Day,” which recognizes that mixed-breed dogs are every bit as rewarding to befriend as purebred dogs, on July 30.
August is the month to honor assistance dogs and celebrate a growing interest in holistic health care for pets.
September offers a wide variety of doggie holidays. September 18 marks “Responsible Dog Ownership” and “Puppy Mill Awareness” days. It also includes “Dogs and Politics Day,” which you can read more about at http://www.holidayinsights.com/moreholidays/September/checkersday.htm.
October’s holidays include a host of events geared toward getting people to adopt homeless dogs. It also offers “Animal Welfare Week” and “National Veterinary Technician Week.”
November is “Pet Diabetes Month,” “Wishbones for Pets Month” in which pet sitters throughout the United States and Canada collect food and other items for pets in need and “National Pet Awareness Month.”
December is “Safe Toys and Gifts Month,” which is geared to helping pet owners choose presents that are safe for their pets.
