The methods used to train a dog can vary greatly depending on the breed of dog, the owner or trainer’s philosophy and the expectations an owner has for his or her pet. Working dogs will obviously need more training than a dog that is destined to be a family pet.
No matter how extensive the training, there are a few training devices that can be very helpful. Training devices include:
1. Collars are one of the basic items needed when training dogs of any age. Choose a strong collar of good quality. There are many varieties of collars to choose from. They come in a huge array of colors and fabrics. Some fasten with buckles; others snap to close. Some work as chokers. Avoid using spike collars, which can cause damage to the throat, neck and trachea. Be sure to adjust the collar of choice so that it fits the neck without being able to slip off over the dog’s head. Do not tighten the collar to the point that it restricts the dog’s breathing or causes skin irritation around the neck.
2. Leashes are a must for dog training. They come in many lengths. Short two-foot leashes work well for teaching the dog control. As the dog progresses in his or her training, you may want to use longer leashes that allow the dog to get further away from you. Always use caution when tugging on a dog’s leash. The idea is to get the dog’s attention. You do not want to tug so hard that you inflict injury on your pet.
3. You will need a supply of dog treats to use throughout the training process. Choose small treats that are good for the dog. The treats should be something the dog finds irresistible so that there is motivation for him or her to please you during training sessions. Avoid feeding treats that include excess fat that can cause obesity.
4. Toys are good training devices because they can be used to positively reinforce the lessons your dog is learning. Toys in many instances can be used as rewards in place of food treats.
5. Many trainers believe that crates are a necessary dog training tool. In addition to offering your pet a safe and secure place to rest, crates can aid in housebreaking puppies. Dogs do not like to soil the area in which they rest. If you choose to use a crate, you may want to shop for one that has dividers, which allow the cage to be used from the puppy stage through adulthood.
There are many other dog training devices available at pet stores. Some people prefer to use training pads to housebreak puppies. Some are scented to attract the dog to do its business on the pad. Training pads can be used both indoors and outdoors.
Other training devices may include muzzles and electronic fences, which serve to keep a dog from leaving your yard.
