More and more people are becoming aware of their carbon footprint on our earth and they’re trying to reduce their impact. Although it is not their fault, our dogs can negatively impact the earth and we need to find ways to “green” up their lifestyles.
One can start by choosing doggie supplies that are eco-friendly. The key is to look for items that are made from biodegradable materials or recycle products.
Avoid buying products made from plastics and those that are treated with chemicals. It is “greener” to choose beds, clothing or toys made from natural fibers such as hemp or cotton. There are companies that recycle cotton and make fleece products from recycled plastic bottles. There are more earth-friendly choices.
You can even go green with your dog’s toys. Start by choosing those that are more environmentally-friendly. If your dog tires of them or outgrows them, pass them on to another dog. Don’t throw them in the trash where they will just add clutter to our landfills.
When purchasing an item for your dog, look at the packaging. Choose those that are recyclable.
In order to be green, you need to consider how you dispose of your dog’s feces. It is best to collect your dog’s excrement in biodegradable pooper-scooper bags that can safely be flushed down the toilet.
Some people advocate composting dog feces. Others say absolutely not because dog feces can contain bacteria that is harmful to humans. Do some research before deciding how you will handle your dog’s waste.
Dogs should be leashed when in the wilderness. The reason for this is that dogs like to chase animals such as deer. It is easy for a dog to run a deer to death, so take Fido to the dog park to do his running.
When walking your dog, it is best to do so in your own neighborhood so that you are not burning fossil fuels to travel to other destinations. If you take your dog to a dog park daily, consider swapping days and staying in your own neighborhood.
Select dog food that is organic or made locally from fresh products. Avoid products that contain hormones. There are many holistic foods available in pet stores and on the Internet. Another option is to make your own food. However, if you choose this route, you need to discuss your dog’s nutritional needs with his or her veterinarian.
When battling fleas and ticks, try to choose options that are the least toxic. The products that are applied as a spot treatment are preferable to chemical sprays, powders or collars.
Be careful of how you dispose of old medications and chemical products such as flea sprays and powders and shampoos. Proper disposal is important to the green movement. If you are not sure where to take these products, call 1-800-CLEAN-UP.
Your dog and the world thank you for your efforts to become greener in your lifestyle. Every little bit helps protect our earth for later generations.
