Alternative Medicine
Just as people are exploring other forms of health care for themselves, they’re also finding success with these methods for their pets. Some people may just be learning about alternative medicine, but most of these treatments have been around for quite some time. Let’s talk about a few different forms.
Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medicine that has been around for centuries. It involves the use of fine needles inserted into specific parts of the body to stimulate good health. Acupuncture is based on the theory that the life energy that flows from the body’s organs can be disturbed by injury or disease. The needles redirect the flow of energy back to more healthy paths.
Acupuncture is used to treat skeletal and muscle problems, neurological diseases, skin conditions, arthritis, chronic pain, and more. Owners who have canine athletes also use it to help improve competitive performance.
Chiropractic
Chiropractic is a health care profession that focuses on disorders of the muscle, skeletal, and nervous systems. The theory behind chiropractic care is that when these systems are out of alignment, they can affect body function. Chiropractic is used to treat back, muscle, and joint pain. It’s a holistic treatment, which also emphasizes the importance of overall health and wellness.
Herbal
Herbal treatments are used to treat a variety of problems, from carsickness to arthritis pain. Some, such as glucosamine, have scientific studies behind them to prove their effectiveness. Just because they are natural, however, doesn’t mean they are nontoxic. If you are considering herbal treatment for your puppy, consult a specialist first. Always let your veterinarian know of any herbal supplements your puppy takes, because some may not combine well with certain medications.
Homeopathy
Homeopathic medicine is medicine that determines the underlying energy pattern of an animal and analyzes what can be done to bring the energy back into balance. The goal of homeopathy is not just to address the symptoms of a disease but to address all changes in the energy balance of an animal. Homeopathic remedies are extremely diluted solutions of herbs, animal products, and chemicals. If you are considering homeopathic treatment for your puppy, always consult a specialist first. Tell your veterinarian about any treatments that your puppy may be taking, because they may not combine well with other medications.
Massage
Massage is the practice of applying pressure or vibration to the soft tissues of the body. It encourages healing by promoting blood flow, relieving tension, loosening muscles, and stimulating nerves. It’s used to ease pain and help improve muscle tone, and it can be a great way to get your puppy used to handling. Owners who have canine athletes also use it to help ease muscles during training and competition.
If you’d like to learn how to massage your puppy, find a professional to teach you. Massage should feel good to your puppy. Stop if she becomes agitated or doesn’t enjoy the massage.
