Your puppy probably won’t notice if you forget his or her birthday, but why let an opportunity for a good party pass you by?
Try throwing a birthday party for your puppy. You just might be surprised how successful it is. It’s an event that dogs and people can both enjoy.
There are several options for puppy birthday parties. If your dog is friendly with other canines, you can throw a party for just the dogs. If your friends like your puppy, there’s nothing wrong with throwing a doggie birthday party for human guests. Another option is to invite both puppies and people. Either way, there’s a lot of fun to be had.
Some friends are bound to think you’ve gone over the edge when you invite them to Rover’s birthday party. Don’t let that deter you. Those who complain are often the most pleasantly surprised.
The party menu depends on the guest list – human, canine or both. The human part is pretty easily covered. Plan as you would for any other party.
If there are to be canine guests, you will need to buy or prepare food appropriate for puppy consumption. That means you need to have lots of doggie treats. If you want to go the extra mile, there are a lot of canine-friendly birthday cake recipes on the Internet.
Carob, which is often used as an alternative to chocolate, is an ingredient that can be used to make a cake that both your puppy and human guests can eat. Never use chocolate because it can be very harmful to all breeds of dogs.
Carob Chip Bundt Cake is one that both your puppy and people could eat. It is easy to make and a cake will feed 16 to 20 dogs. Start by mixing 1 cup of whole wheat flour and 1 teaspoon of baking soda together. Add one quarter cup of peanut butter, one quarter cup of melted butter, one third cup of honey (this is optional, but will make it more appealing to your human guests), one egg and one half cup of carob chips, which can usually be found in health food stores. Mix everything together. Bake in a greased ring mold or bundt cake pan at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 40 minutes. When the cake is cool to the touch, melt about one half cup of carob chips and drizzle over your culinary creation. Unused portions can be stored in the refrigerator.
Anyone invited to a puppy’s birthday party should make sure all gifts are canine-friendly. Snacks, rawhide bones and chews and puppy toys are available in many grocery, discount, department and pet stores.
Plan activities to entertain your guests. If all those who attend are people, be sure to allow time for them to play with the puppy. Throw a ball or stick. Blow up a balloon and see if you can get the puppy to volley the balloon back and forth with you.
If the guest list is all dogs, make sure you have activities planned for them. Allow them to romp and play with each other.
If you throw a good party, you’ll find your human guests will anxiously await the following year’s invitation and your puppy will love you for it.
