Important Information to Put on a Puppy’s ID Tag

Puppy Id Tag

It only takes a split second for your puppy to escape out the door. You’d be amazed at how fast those four little legs can move when puppy is on a mission. Losing a puppy is a terrifying experience. That’s why an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure when it comes to insuring the safety of your dog.

Although many states require dog licenses, you shouldn’t rely on that system of identification to protect your dog. Consider the fact that most licensing agencies are open only during Monday through Friday business hours. If your puppy disappears in the evening or on a weekend, there’s no one to call until the agency reopens for business. A lot can happen in those overnight or weekend hours.

The use of identification tags can prove to be incredibly valuable. There are many kinds of puppy identification tags available that attach to the puppy’s collar. Choose one that is durable and attach it securely to the puppy’s collar. ID tags come in a variety of sizes and shapes. There are simple plastic discs, metal tags and even solid gold, silver and jewel-encrusted ones.

Be sure to keep your contact information current. The basic information that should be included on the identification tag is the puppy’s name, as well as the owner’s name, address and telephone number. If space permits, include a second contact telephone number.

Identification tags are available from many Internet sources as well as popular pet stores. Veterinarians often offer pet identification tag mail order services.

Unfortunately, puppy identification tags are small in size, so space is limited. Wearing an ID tag in addition to a dog license (where required) offers a little more piece of mind, but what happens if someone finds Fido, calls you and you don’t answer? Will they keep your puppy safe until they can make contact or will they walk away and leave your puppy to fend alone?

Puppy owners can gain another level of reassurance through the use of microchips that are implanted inside your puppy. Veterinarians and dog rescue agencies can scan the chip and determine who the owner is. Microchips are usually implanted by veterinarians.

Recently, a new “Pet Protector System” has been developed to insure your puppy’s safety. The system makes use of a metal dog ID tag that has a unique number that is allocated to your puppy when you join the program. There is a toll-free telephone number that accesses a 24-hour hotline available nationwide. One might think of the system as a 24-hour 911 emergency system for your dog.

The “Pet Protection System,” which costs less than $2 a month to subscribe to, is an effective means to bringing your puppy home. There are other advantages to joining the program as well. If your puppy is injured and you can’t be reached, the Pet Protection staff will direct the person who found the dog to the nearest veterinarian.

Other bonuses include travel protection, natural disaster preparedness advice and assistance, and a list of pet-friendly accommodations.

The “Top Tag Pet ID Tag” is another means of identification services. The tag is actually a very small 64MB computer flash drive that allows you to store all of your puppy’s information. Complete with a waterproof case that attaches to the collar, the flash drive stores contact information as well as information about your puppy’s veterinarian, kennel, diet, health and medications and vaccination history. In addition, you can add information that might include other people who could rescue your dog in the event you cannot be contacted.

Remember, it is your responsibility to keep your puppy safe. Any of the above listed systems can help you accomplish that.
