The sun is shining brightly. You rush out the door to take your dog for a walk. You are forced to squint to see in the brightness of the summer day. You had back indoors and grab your sunglasses. Did you ever think about getting a pair for the dog?
Believe it or not, there are several companies that manufacture sunglasses for the canine species. The sunglasses are causing quite a stir among those trendsetters who want their dog to be a fashion statement and they’re proving practical for pet owners who want to protect their dog’s eyes.
One company advertises “polycarbonate (shatterproof), anti-fog lenses.” Another advertises, “From sporty to sexy, masculine to feminine,” doggie sunglasses are designed to “suit the personality and style of each individual dog.” Sunglasses can “make or break the appearance of your dog.”
In fact, doggie sunglasses are becoming so popular that you can even have your dog’s sunglasses fitted with prescription lenses to correct poor vision.
The average canine pair of sunglasses ranges in price from $10 to $30. They come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes to accommodate dogs that weigh one pound to 200 pounds. Most glasses are adjustable and have a chin strap and a strap that goes around the back of the head.
While it is not at all unusual for some folks to outfit their dogs with clothing and sunglasses that make a statement, others are finding the glasses useful for eye protection. They are a great safety addition for dogs that ride motorcycles, boat, accompany you to the beach or just love to hang their head out of the car window. Hunting dogs that run through heavy brush can also benefit from wearing doggie goggles or glasses.
Pet goggles or sunglasses block the harmful effects of ultraviolet light and may even help Rover feel more comfortable outdoors. Ultraviolet light is present on cloudy days as well as bright sunny ones.
Constant exposure to ultraviolet light can be attributed to the cause cataracts.
In addition to protecting a dog’s eyes from the elements such as bright sunlight and the glare from snow-covered ground, doggie sunglasses and goggles are great eye protectors. The glasses help to keep wind and debris out of the dog’s eyes. If you have a dog that likes to ride with his head outside the car window (this is not the safest practice), the glasses can help protect the dog’s eyes from injury.
Now that you’ve decided that Rover needs a pair of sunglasses, you need to find a pet boutique where Rover can be fitted for the glasses. If you can’t find a boutique near your home, there are plenty of websites from which you can order the latest in doggie eyewear.
The big question is whether or not Rover is willing to wear the glasses. Try introducing them with a pocketful of treats. The treats may be enough to distract the dog from trying to remove the glasses.
It may take a little time for Rover to adjust to his new eyewear. Have patience. Once the dog realizes that the glasses make outdoor life more comfortable, he or she will be glad to wear them.
