You May Now Kiss the Doggie Bride

by Jeff Van Dalsum

Just about the time you think you have seen it all, something new like doggie weddings manage to come along.

While doggie weddings were once for the rich and famous, their popularity has spread and more folks are planning big events for their four-legged friends. Some view getting their dog hitched as the social statement of the year. Others figure a doggie wedding is a great excuse for a big party. All agree that planning doggie wedding is almost as taxing as planning one for people!

One of the first orders of business is to make a guest list for the wedding. Be sure to include your dog’s favorite friends that hang out at the dog park. You’ll have to decide if the wedding is just for dogs or if your dog’s human friends are going to be invited as well.

You will need to choose a wedding date and a place for the wedding and reception to take place. Dogs love to be outdoors, so consider one of your dog’s favorite recreation spots. It could be the dog park or by the lake. It could take place in your back yard. Choose a time of year when the temperatures are comfortable for canines.

Many romantics choose beach weddings. While these can be nice, it is important that you make sure dogs are allowed on the beach. There’s nothing like a police officer and a fine to ruin a beautiful day.

You will need to provide plenty of bags so that the owners of your dog’s friends can clean up after them.

If you are going to have treats at the table for the canine wedding guests, choose healthy snacks. You will also need to order a cake that can be eaten by the canine guests. Don’t laugh. Canine bakeries are becoming popular in many areas.

Next, you will have to choose wedding attire for your dog. Is the event going to be formal with gowns and tuxedos or is it going to be a more relaxed event where the canine guests can wear t-shirts? There are many commercial businesses that offer doggie attire suitable for any kind of wedding.

Don’t forget the rings. Since dogs can’t really wear them on their paws, you can choose rings with which to decorate their collars. Some folks just opt to buy matching collars for the bride and groom. Attach a small corsage and the dog is ready to go.

Who is going to officiate at the wedding? Are you going to do the honors or allow a friend to marry off your furry companion? The choice is yours.

As the big day approaches, both bride and groom need a bath to prepare for the big event. You can do this yourself or book your dog into a canine spa. After all, a wedding does call for special treatment such as nail painting, pedicures and massages.

It is important to plan some activities for the reception. However, most dogs are pretty good at devising ways to entertain themselves. Just add a few Frisbees, toys and tug ropes and the dogs will entertain themselves for hours.

Once the wedding is over, be sure to clean up the venue where it was held. Leave it in better shape than you found it.

As far as the honeymoon goes – the sky and your budget are the limit.
